About the Firm

In 2004, with 11 years’ experience as a lawyer for people in need of help, Lori Bencoe founded the Bencoe Law Firm in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Cherie LaCour joined her in 2006 and in 2008, the firm became Bencoe & LaCour Law PC. In 2010, they welcomed fellow trial lawyer James “Jim” Wood, and in June 2011, became Bencoe, LaCour & Wood Law PC. Our professional calling is to help people who are wronged by corporations, government or individuals whose wrongful actions or decisions cause serious harm or death. We try to help the family heal and move forward, and also to hold the corporation accountable for the wrong, with the goal of improving safety standards for others.

Examples include:

  • the hospital that lost a sponge, leaving it in the patient’s abdomen during surgery;
  • the healthcare corporation that cut corners by understaffing its hospital at night, neglecting a patient who died from lack of oxygen;
  • the commercial trucker who ran through a crosswalk, hitting a pedestrian whom he left for dead, fleeing so he could keep his job and hide his checkered past;
  • the physician who fused the wrong level of a patient’s spine, causing permanent injury;
  • the governmental agency that chose not to properly protect students from traffic, allowing a student to be crushed by a car;
  • the government healthcare clinic that failed to refer a female patient for a screening mammogram, thereby missing the breast cancer she had, until it could not be treated;
  • the healthcare corporation that was so overworked that a nurse did not know her patient’s feeding tube had been accidentally thrust into the lung, not the stomach;
  • the healthcare corporation that chose to treat a suspicious skin lesion cosmetically for cash, thereby failing to diagnose skin cancer in its young patient (who ultimately died);
  • the driver who was so intoxicated he crashed his truck into a family’s home in the night;
  • the construction company that chose not to light and fence a construction area by a retail parking lot, allowing an elderly woman next door to fall down its steep embankment;
  • the hospital corporation that chose to send its critically ill, elderly patient home alone before reading her test results;
  • the hospital corporation that was so understaffed its patient had a fatal heart attack in the waiting room;
  • the pharmacy corporation that administered ten times the prescribed dose of medicine causing permanent neurological injury;
  • the hospital corporation that chose not to admit a pregnant patient who claimed her water had broken (resulting in loss of one child and permanent injury to the other);
  • the dental clinic that chose to pull a molar without an x-ray, breaking the patient’s jaw and permanently injuring a nerve

Our firm is passionate about dignity and safety in healthcare, and about corporate and governmental responsibility. We evaluate each potential client’s claim carefully, by studying the necessary records and literature or construction codes, and consulting with experts in the area of healthcare, traffic safety or engineering needed, to determine if wrongdoing has occurred and if so, how to prove it at trial. When we accept a case, we commit to prepare it as though it were going to trial. Our experience with medical issues enables us to help clients with all types of injuries.
